The son of Charles Courtney, Sir Francis Courtney is a Nautonnier Knight of the Temple of the Order of St George and the Holy Grail. He is a deeply religious and patriotic man.
In Birds of Prey he sails on a caravel, named after his wife, Lady Edwina. Hired on a commission signed by the Earl of Clarendon, Edward Hyde, in the name of King Charles II, he hunts down the ships of the Dutch fleet currently at war with England. Following one attack, he takes on two hostages, but is later betrayed by the hostages working in association with one of his shipmates and is sentenced to death for piracy.
