Manfred is the illegitimate son of Centaine de Thiry and Lothar de la Rey. At first raised by Lothar, he is brought up by his uncle Tromp Bierman following Lothar’s imprisonment. He competes in boxing in the 1936 Olympics, using the nickname ‘White Sword’. He is a critical member of the far-right group, Ossewabrandwag, and is Minister of Police in the Afrikaans Nationalist Government of South Africa.
