The son of Lord Hal Courtney and Yasmini, Dorian is the youngest Courtney brother. He is called ‘Bomvu’, meaning ‘red’, by Aboli because of his hair. He also has the Courtney green eyes and is determined to keep up with his older twin brothers, Tom and Guy. He is very young at the start of Monsoon – only eleven – and has to plead with his father to allow him to accompany his brothers to sea.
At sea, Dorian is captured by Arab pirates, and sold into slavery to a Prince of Oman, who later adopts him. He then meets his wife, Yasmini, one of the Prince’s daughters, and has a son, Mansur. He becomes a warrior, aiding Al – Malik, his adopted father, to defend against the Ottoman Empire. However, when Zayn Al – Din, Dorian’s lifelong nemesis, becomes Caliph, Dorian is forced to flee to Africa. It is here Dorian later reunites with his brother, Tom.
In Blue Horizon, Dorian is forced to leave Africa. Following a civil war to reclaim his title from Zayn-Al-Din, he reclaims his position as the rightful Caliph of Oman.
