Strong, beautiful and feminine, Constance grows up in Madras, doted on by her mother, Verity, and father, Mansur. She often breaks the rules as a child, leading her brother Theo into trouble. Following the tragic death of her parents, she is placed in the care of her cousin, Gerard, who separates her from Theo and becomes the first in a series of corrupting influences in her life. When she is thrown into the black hole of Calcutta, she faces near – certain death but survives, promising herself never to again be in a position of weakness. She uses her beauty and skills to rise higher in society in order to secure her independence and ensure her survival.
